Cease Fire Rally Nov. 8th

On November 8th, 2023, another “Cease Fire” demonstration by Palestinian protesters unfolded near the United Nations building in New York City. These gatherings have become a daily occurrence. Across the street, a small contingent of Jewish counter-protestors was present during this particular event. One Jewish individual, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed concern, stating, “The sad part of these demonstrations is that now there’s more taunting from both sides. It saddens me to see people I actually called friends making fun of the other side when this is such a sad situation for all.”

The rally attracted notable figures, including Black and Palestinian leaders advocating for the Cease-Fire. Philosopher, political activist, and 2024 presidential candidate Cornel West addressed the crowd, and also marched on 42nd street holding a banner.

Like in most of these demonstrations it didn’t go without altercation, a man from the Palestinian side went over the divide holding a small watermelon on his hand (see image) and walked right into the area where jews were protesting, NYPD immediately intervened.

Bike Kill 2023

New York City’s subcultures bring life into its neighborhoods. One event that brings us the spirit of rebellion, creativity, and community is “Bike Kill,” an underground extravaganza, to say the least.

Bike Kill is not your average bike ride through Central Park. Started in the early 2000s by a group of renegade cyclists known as the Black Label Bike Club, Bike Kill is an annual gathering that defies convention and embraces the unconventional. It takes place in empty lots or industrial spaces, this year a dead end street in Brooklyn.

The bikes transformed, mutated, and customized into rolling works of art. Participants let their imaginations run wild as they modify their bicycles, creating eccentric and often outlandish designs that defy the norms of traditional bike culture. From tall bikes to tandem contraptions that require synchronized pedaling, to oil drums as wheels, the creativity on display at Bike Kill knows no bounds.

The event operates on the fringes of legality, often attracting the attention of local authorities. Yet, this only seems to add to its allure, as participants view the event as a form of peaceful protest against the constraints of societal norms.

Bike Kill is not just a bike event; it’s a testament to the spirit of rebellion and creativity that is in the heart of New York City. As an annual gathering that defies convention, it brings together a diverse group of individuals who share a passion for self-expression, camaraderie, and the thrill of the unconventional, and I really mean the unconventional part. Whether you’re a seasoned participant or a curious onlooker, Bike Kill offers a unique and unforgettable experience that captures the essence of NYC’s vibrant subcultures.

El Sr de los Milagros

Annually, during the month of October, a grand procession unfolds in Lima, Peru to commemorate a significant historical event: the aftermath of a life-altering earthquake that struck both Lima in the 17th century. The Señor de los Milagros, also known as the Lord of Miracles, is a revered representation of Jesus Christ, held in deep reverence in Lima.

The Señor de los Milagros procession in New York City mirrors the tradition in Lima. Following a mass held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, women known as “Humadoras” play a special role by carrying incense in front of the altar. Their task is to purify the air as the procession moves forward, just as is done in the original Lima procession.

Pro Palestine Rally

On October 7th, the militant group Hamas, based in Palestine, initiated an assault on Israeli territory, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and the abduction of over 100 individuals. On October 13th, Palestinians from around the world came together to participate in the “International Day of Action for Palestine.” In New York City, thousands of Palestinians were joined by various groups, including Americans for Palestine and Jews for Palestine, among others.

To Palestinians, this attack was perceived as a defensive response to what they regard as ‘atrocities from Israel’ during these seven and a half decades. An elderly Palestinian shared, ‘For those of you unfamiliar with our history, it is a very confusing situation. Many may not even know that Israel was established 75 years ago, displacing Palestinians into the confines of Gaza, which constitutes a very small part of what Palestine was.’

Guinea’s President at UNGA

This morning at the United Nations, the interim president of Guinea Mamady Doumbouya addressed the assembly, setting the stage for a passionate display of contrasting opinions. Across from the UN a noticeable divide emerged between those supporting Doumbouya and those firmly opposed. While the atmosphere remained relatively respectful, both factions engaged in a spirited vocal exchanges for a significant duration. Towards the end , the Minister of Foreign Affairs and several supporters of the president entered the scene, infusing the area with dancing, jubilant chants, and a flurry of selfies, creating a celebratory atmosphere. In quick succession, members of the opposition congregated behind NYPD barricades, expressing their discontent with the current Guinean government. Tensions occasionally reached a boiling point, hinting at the possibility of a more volatile demonstration, but the intervention of the NYPD effectively maintained order and separated the two groups.

Mamady Doumbouya’s rise to power in Guinea through a military coup has ignited intense controversy. His takeover, seen by some as a solution to political grievances, has drawn vehement opposition due to concerns about democratic backsliding, a lack of transparency in the transition timeline, allegations of human rights abuses, economic mismanagement, and the nation’s regional and international isolation. These issues have deepened divisions within Guinea, leaving the country in a state of political uncertainty and raising questions about its path toward democracy and stability.
