Transgender Rights Rally May 31 2023

On May 31st, 2023, a peaceful rally advocating for Transgender Rights took place in Washington Square Park. Despite the Park’s Police requesting the attendees to refrain from using a megaphone on several occasions, the event remained peaceful within the park premises. Subsequently, as the rally participants began to exit from the southwest side of the park, an increasing number of NYPD officers arrived at the scene. Specialized police units were present, prepared to handle any potential disruptions.

When trans activist Qween Jean stepped onto McDougal Street and proceeded south, the police received orders to proceed alongside the protestors, leading to clashes with some protesters who were not on the sidewalks. The situation quickly escalated within one block, and the clashes continued until they reached the corner of Sullivan and 3rd Street. At this point, Qween Jean entered a deli and was subsequently arrested.

It is noteworthy that Qween Jean was released today, June 1st, which coincides with the beginning of Pride Month.
